Mini-cupcakes at Scarlett's Bakery

Tonight the sight of these mini-cupcakes drew me into Scarlett’s Bakery, a cute little shop that’s been open less than 2 months in my neighborhood.

My friend and I thought 1.20 euros per mini-cupcake was a bit much for such a small treat, but I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to resist next time.

Regular-sized cupcakes were 3.20, but we both opted for the cheesecake, which at 3.80 for a huge slice seemed like the best deal.

I’m no connossieur, but the cheesecake was yum to me. Plus the bottom of the cake tasted just like Graham Crackers. Graham Crackers! I haven’t had those in like two decades! I said to my friend. There wasn’t *enough* of this crust for me.

A healthy (?) sized cheesecake

We were right about the size.

“Death by cheesecake,” my friend proclaimed. I couldn’t finish mine and wondered whether I should ask to take the rest home. “Doggy bags” just aren’t done in France and for a dessert I imagine even less so.

“But this will be my test!” I said.

We had been remarking that the staff (two young women in their 20s, I’d say) seemed sweet. The closest cupcake place previous to Scarlett’s opening was Cupcake & Co, which while good, always left us feeling a little let down because of the less-than enthusiastic service.

(I know, I know, I’m in Paris, what do I expect? We just took it as an affront when I went in for my birthday one time and the woman was not so nice. “Cupcakes are American!” my friend wanted to say. “And we serve them with a smile!”)

Blast from the past: Birthday cupcake. My friend finally got Cupcake & Co to put a candle in my cupcake, despite initial cold attitude.

Anyway, back to Scarlett’s. I go up to the counter and tell them how good the cheesecake was (super bon!), but that it was so rich, I’d like to take the rest home with me.

Pas de souci! No problem, she said and smiled and slid the rest of the cake into a cute little box.

Ok, done. This is our new cupcake place, we agreed.

That woman peeking in through the window? Yeah, she came in, too

The room itself is nice and bright with lime green and pink walls and comfy chairs.

The opening hours are listed as open 11 AM to 6 PM Tuesday through Friday, but we were there until 7 PM. (Wonder if they need to change their site – and also what’s posted on the door! Apparently they do Saturday and Sunday brunch, too, and are open 10-7:30 weekends).

Colorful enough to keep you awake...then the sugar high will take over

My favorite part, though?

Three French women sat down behind us. They had ordered 3 mini-cupcakes and a slice of cheesecake.

“How does this work?” one of them said, looking at the mini-cupcake.

Were they flummoxed by the paper wrapping? She managed to take that off (good job!) and then starts eating the cupcake with a spoon! A spoon! Did I tell you how small these mini-cupcakes are? Bite-sized? Like a small bite. But no, no, this operation called for the delicate slicing with a spoon.

Oh good lord, people. Some things are better done with your hands.

Resident Americans, we’ll show them how it’s done next time.

hahah I’ve seen lots of French women pass by cupcakes and ask if they were edible! Most say “they’re too pretty to eat”. The cupcake trend is no longer a trend, it’s here to stay. I’ll have to check this place out!

A great site and will go to the bakery. We love the food in Paris. So I have a question: how can we set up our blog so that whenever there is a new post people can get it in their inbox as with your blog.

    Thanks,
    Eugene

Hi Eugene. Thanks for stopping by. I’m not sure what service you use for your blog, but WordPress has an option called “Email Subscription” that I could select so it automatically put that as an option on my blog. I bet there’s something similar on most platforms. Hope that helps!

Oh boy! I love a good cupcake. And cheesecake? That’s a killer. So, I will stop by on Tues — that’s the plan as I’ll have a few free hours on Tues afternoon — to get me a cupcake or 3. I’ll tell myself that I’m buying them for me and for D before heading to Prague. Yes, I’m trying to fool myself and I hope it works.

I will have to check out Scarlett’s the next time I’m in Paris — thanks for the tip!! I can just imagine the chic Parisian women eating a cupcake with a spoon. We have a French exchange student living in our home this school year — he’s only now begun to eat a pizza slice with his hands, rather than a fork and knife!!!

Thanks for this article! I’m one of the “two women” from the Cupcakes Bakery (I’m the Baker). Happy that my cupcakes pleased you !

    See you soon!

I can do you one better — an 8 year old Belgian girl came to our house for a meal and proceeded to eat a mini muffin with a fork and knife. Afterwards, she said her favorite part of the meal was the cupcake.

I’m soooooo in love with Scarlett’s cheesecakes!
The only problem is : I pass the shop every day to go home and it’s really hard to resist!Gluttony and temptation do not mix (especially not for the diet!)

You’re so totally luck to have cupcakes AND cheesecake nearby – I am so craving cupcakes right now!

Those French ladies really do take the biscuit!

That’s pretty close to Cupcakes and Co as well, so what is that round there now – cupcake central? I’m with the people who say that they are too pretty to eat. What they mean is that they look great, but then you’re let down by the fact that they’re basically a bit of sponge with a dollop of butter cream on top.

That leads me to another question – do men eat cupcakes?

Yeah, that’s why I gave a *brief* mention to Cupcakes & Co – but quickly said I’m making the switch-over to Scarlett’s. Nice service will always win with me.

But, oh my gosh. I hadn’t put it together, but you’re right! I have *never* seen a man in any of these cupcake shops! Never!

How funny – I just heard of Scarlett & Co for the first time yesterday. Groupon had a deal going on for them – it was a 2 person deal, with each person getting 2 cupcakes &

I love going to Coffee Parisien and watching people eat American food with knives and forks. My favorite was guy attacking his bagel with lox and cream cheese Continental-style.

Hmmm. men and cupcakes….have they never noticed the remarkable similarity between cupcakes and breasts? The semiotics boggle the mind :-)…but back to the essential question…do these adorable cupcakes, mini or maxi, actually taste good? I adore a good cupcake, but have yet to find a commercial one worth eating…please investigate further, chere reporter! mg

Haha. Wow, I’ve never made the cupcake/breast connection. Apparently neither have any men because I’ve never seen a man enjoying a cupcake! 🙂
But yes, your essential question: I will be back to investigate. Do not fear. I was just completely full after that huge piece of cheesecake! There is only one baker (Sylvie) who bakes the cupcakes fresh each day, so I’m assuming they’ll be pretty good.

Oy, now I’m craving cupcakes! About eating them à la francaise– Do you remember the Seinfeld episode which begins with Elaine telling Jerry that she saw her boss, Mr. Pitt, eat a Snicker’s bar with a knife & fork? By the end, they see a woman cutting up an Almond Joy and someone eating M & Ms with a spoon! The last line is Elaine standing up & shouting: “What is WRONG with you people? Have you all gone MAD?” I gotta say that Ann’s story of someone eating a bagel & lox that way, really takes the cake. *rimshot*;-)

Yay! Another spot to add to my list, another reason to plan a spring visit to Paris. Thanks for the tip!

It’s also always cracked me up, watching Frenchies slice and dice their burgers with knives and forks. You can understand why we Americans seem so barbaric…

PS. That birthday photo of you is adorable! xo

That it a little pricey for a cupcake, as you pointed out, but it’s still a lot less expensive than Laduree. So I will definitely have to check it out . . . and maybe experience a little death by cheesecake, too.

Hi there. I have to admit, I went back and tried the mini-cupcakes on my second visit….and I was disappointed! Very cute, but not as tasty as they look. The cake was dense and more muffin like, whereas I expect a cupcake to be light and spongy. Oh well, go for the cheesecake and smiles, I guess!
