32 Flavors

So I wasn’t going to do this. But then, one of the perks of having a blog is receiving nice comments that make my day. And today is my birthday. And nice comments on birthday = even better birthday.

32. Hmm. Haven’t really heard anything in particular about 32. It seems like a nice enough age to me. And Ani DiFranco’s “32 Flavors” of course springs to mind:

(I’ll also pretend that the applause is for me)

Ok, not really a birthday song. But I do stand by this: “I am 32 flavors and then some.”

This song sent me down memory lane. I used to listen to Ani all of the time, particularly in my college years. She voiced both the full angst and awesomeness of that period for me. (Life is dramatic and hard! I am kick-ass and amazing!) Oh god, if I only knew.

After playing this little ditty, I started listening to a whole bunch of other Ani songs, what used to be a pretty regular soundtrack to my days though it’s been years. And I realize, goodness! She is still awesome!

And then I remembered that “32 Flavors” comes from her 1995 album. And that 1995 is FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.

This revelation/reminder of time speeding by started making me feel a bit bad, which was totally not the point.

Which is why I invite you to wish me a happy birthday and make me feel better. Because it will.

Thanks!

Happy birthday, Sion!! (I didn’t realize you are a fellow Scorpio – you are two days ahead of me, but I have four years on you πŸ™‚ ). I am wishing you a day of happiness and reflection, celebration and peace, and all of the little things that make a birthday special: well wishes, surprise messages, thoughtfulness and generosity and, bien sur, great food and drink. Enjoy every minute of it, and here’s to a fulfilling, adventurous, incredibly special year ahead! xo, Amy

AMY! Fellow Scorpio! I did not know this, either and you have just become even more awesome in my eyes! (You already were, and sorry to other astrological signs, but Scorpios really do rock πŸ™‚ )

Thank you so much for the kind thoughts. So far the day has seen all of those wonderful things. I will be bringing them with me through the year ahead!

I know I already wished you a happy birthday via Twitter…but the more the merrier I say!

“And then some”… those are the best parts I think. The number means nothing — 32 is almost 10 years in my rearview mirror. It’s what you do to make things interesting and enjoyable. So, to that end, I wish you an interesting, enjoyable, fantastic, happy, and rewarding year!

Thank you, Tanya! Please feel free to wish me happy birthday as many times as you like. Really. I kind of think birthdays are ea big deal!

I completely agree about the age. It was more thinking about how FAST time goes by. But you betcha, I’m all about making every second count. Here’s to an interesting year for all of us!

Wow, how fitting and timely to read this blog post: I turned 32 yesterday, I used to listen to Ani DiFranco in MY college years and I love that song. Oh β€” and I too was feeling a bit down on life and the years passing by, but oh how wonderful to hear my thoughts and emotions echoed so clearly in your post. Though we’ve never met, I really do wish you a happy birthday and hope your spirits go up just a little bit knowing you’ve had at least 10 comments before this one wishing you the best, and knowing that the words you put out in cyberspace have the power to echo the sentiments of and move someone thousands of miles away. Thank you.

Hi Adrineh! Thank you! I receive stranger & friend well wishes with equal appreciation! Wow, that is amazing. Happy birthday to you, fellow Scorpio! (I love Scorpios!)

My spirits have *definitely* gone up! Thank you so, so much for stopping by and for your words. It really is powerful to have so many people come out in force via cyberspace just because of something I write. Thank you!

Happy birthday, sweetie! We’re the same age and I just started following your blog but I know how you feel. Remember when being born in ’78 was really cool? I stopped advertising my age around five or six years ago… no longer seemed cool or “young” but I know we’re just that!

The only certainty about life is death and taxes… and that we ALL get older, not OLD!

    Here’s wishing you a very happy b-day! πŸ™‚

Thanks, Danielle! And thanks for being a new follower!

And hey, I still think ’78 is totally cool. I wasn’t sure whether to announce my age either – but heck, that’s *such* a good song I figured what the heck!

      Glad you’re here. Thanks again!

I hope you had a wonderful Birthday! 32, what a great age. My 30’s were my best years. I am only 42, but would love to be back in that age. It when your body hasn’t started aging yet, your mind is fresh, and there are many more great life building years in front of you. Enjoy those years…HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I had this page open in a tab all day yesterday, meaning to comment *here* about the b-day, but only managed to post to you on Twitter before I had to run off to babysit. And then today was crazy, too. *sigh* I hope the day was wonderful, Sion. A very happy 32nd to you, and thank you for posting some Ani Difranco!

So, what did you do to celebrate the day? I want the post-b-day write up!! πŸ˜‰

LOL. Don’t worry. I do like attention on my birthday, but I don’t require people to wish me a happy birthday on every form of communication possible πŸ™‚ Your Twitter message was great!

If I had it together today, I would do a post b-day write-up – if only because some of it might actually qualify as a “Faux Pas Friday” πŸ™‚ Maybe next week!

Hope you have a non-crazy weekend. (Or crazy in a good way).
